Siargao Island, the Surfing Capital of the Philippines


If you are a surfing enthusiast, go pack your things and get ready to go to one of the world’s top Surfing Waves, the Siargao Island which is tagged as the “Surfing Capital of the Philippines”. It is located in the province of Surigao de Norte, a mosaic island in the northeastern tip of Mindanao. It is a tear-drop shaped island which is considered a hidden tropical jewel of the Pacific with the most breathtaking beaches in the world. It is dubbed by most surfing experts as the “home of wave surfing” and the famous “cloud 9”, the largest sport and tourist attraction.

The Island of Siargao can be reached by means of air and sea travel. Air travel is either from Manila-Cebu-Siargao route or Manila-Butuan-Siargao via Air Philippines, Cebu Pacific and Philippine Airlines. Sea vessels like Super ferry, Sulpicio Shipping Lines, Cokaliong, and Cebu Ferries also have regular sea travel schedules via routes of Manila to Surigao, Cebu to Surigao, and Butuan to Surigao.

Siargao Island has a land mass of approximately 437 kilometers that has similar neighboring islands and islets. Its coastline is marked with consistent excellent reefs, small points and fine white sandy beaches. Aside from being known for its powerful and fast tidal waves, it is also known as a haven of natural wonders. Some of the spectacular tourist attractions that can be found in Siargao Island are the following:

1. Sohoton Caves and Lagoon is a perfect place for boating and swimming for it has amazing natural beauty in its overhung jungle cliffs, cave tunnel, strange fishes, stalactites, weird corals, pitcher plants, cycads, and wild orchids.

2. Pansukian and Magpupungko Pool has a picturesque coral reef with crystal clear turquoise water which is every ideal for diving and snorkeling.

3. Guyam and Del Carmen Mangrove is an awesome view of pearly white sand islands filled with thick vegetation.

4. Bukas Grande and Taktak Falls has truly spectacular scenery with its crystal water flows that sparkle through sun beam. A large natural pool with cool water at the bottom of the falls is a perfect dive site and ideal for swimming and kayaking.

5. Del Carmen Caub Lagoon is best for boating for its calm serene surroundings that promises a complete relaxing experience.
